Kawira Mwangaza’s Impeachment and the Legal and Political Precedent set

Kawira Mwangaza faces yet another political setback as the High Court upholds the Senate's decision to impeach her. Meru, her traditional political stronghold, is proving to be more hostile than expected.   Will Kawira appeal to the Court of Appeal, or will she pursue an alternative political strategy beyond her impeachment? A difficult choice, indeed. This decision presents a significant challenge, making it hard for her to stage an effective comeback—politically or legally.   The High Court’s decision to uphold her impeachment sets a key precedent in Kenyan political office, particularly for governors. Her case is now a reference point for any other governor facing political opposition or what some may perceive as political persecution.   Laws are crucial, especially when holding the office of a governor. Kawira should have listened to the people and adhered to county government rules and procedures. Following the law and making decisive choices in respon...

The cooperation agreement and the paradigm shift in Kenyan politics

Raila Odinga and president Ruto's coming together is framed as a move to unify the country, as stated in their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), but it may not be what it seems. Even some of the issues they are proposing can be addressed without their so-called "cooperation" agreement. The Constitution of Kenya 2010 provides a robust legal framework to address the country's socio-economic and political challenges, including the Bill of Rights Chapter Four, which safeguards fundamental freedoms. If governance institutions function effectively, there should be no need for such political agreements outside constitutional mandates.   The truth of the matter is that their MOU originates from the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, one of many documents that appear progressive on paper but often fail in implementation. This highlights Kenya's chronic issue: a wealth of policies but a lack of proper execution. If NADCO failed to address critical issues such as t...

Rethinking about career and job market

In Kenya, we have a considerable number of graduates; however, there is an absence of effective mechanisms for managing careers post graduation. We prefer job hunting over creating opportunities that align with the knowledge and skills we acquired in school.   Many graduates actively seek employment in an oversaturated job market. Although our nation is home to bright minds, there is an overdependence on an inflexible system. Kenyan universities release approximately 50,000 graduates into the job market each year. The question is: Is the government itself capable of providing jobs for all of them? Worse still, governments are not even obligated to offer anyone a job!   Many graduates frequently miss the opportunity to acquire essential personal skills such as debate, public speaking, writing, and marketing skills that are crucial for launching entrepreneurial ventures. Marketing, for instance, plays a critical role in business development and the sale of various prod...

Europe’s Peace Plans Solidify Amid the Diplomatic Tiff at the Oval Office

The peace talks at the Oval Office, once anticipated as a critical step toward achieving peace, are now suffering from a diplomatic meltdown. Zelensky, who had hoped that the US administration would offer significant assistance, ended up being disappointed—insisting that Russia’s dominance tactics and violations of peace treaties worry him even more, especially if the US acts solely in its own interests. In his view, Russia cannot be trusted, and hence the US should not be trusted in the peace negotiations either. Zelensky was chased out of the Oval Office, and President Trump said that if he wanted peace talks, he should come back next time when he is ready. Zelensky then headed to London for the summit organized by Keir Starmer and met King Charles at his Sandringham estate on Sunday, 2nd March 2025. The outburst at the Oval Office was the incident that added intensity to the summit, with Europe uniting to ensure the progress of the peace talks following a similar emergency Ukraine s...
